Highcroft Veterinary Referrals ( and B & W Equine Hospital ( are pleased to announce an opening for a Resident in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia to join the current anaesthesia team.


This three-year ECVAA approved standard residency program will be split between Highcroft Veterinary Referrals to achieve the small animal and exotics caseload and B & W Equine Hospital (approximately 30 miles away) for the equine caseload.  Both practices are large specialist referral hospitals in the south west of the UK and offer a growing and interesting caseload across disciplines. The current anaesthesia team at Highcroft is comprised of 3 ECVAA specialists, one board-eligible clinician, one anaesthesia intern and a solid group of experienced anaesthesia nurses. The anaesthesia and analgesia specialists will also provide supervision in equine anaesthesia at B & W Equine Hospital. The farm animal caseload required for the residency programme will be met by supervised externships at other centres.


As per ECVAA pre-residency requirements, the candidates must have done at least a one-year rotating internship or have at least two years experience in general practice. An additional specialized internship in anaesthesia is desirable, but not essential. Experience in equine anaesthesia will also be valuable. The candidates must be UK resident or entitled to reside in UK under UK immigration law and be member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons by the time of the starting date of the position.


The successful candidate is expected to share its main clinical time (35 weeks per year, on a 4-days a week basis) between the two centers. Six weeks per year will be allocated to clinical externships, 6 weeks will be left “off-clinic” to allow study, research work and CPD on top of a 5-weeks annual leave allowance. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in a 1 in 4 out of hours rota split between Highcroft and B & W equine.


The salary for the post will be circa 40K with additional CPD allowance and attractive benefit package.
