Biological Safety Advisor - Business Operations


At CVS Group we are one of the largest integrated veterinary groups in Europe with a turnover in excess of £400M and over 500 veterinary practice sites across the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands. Alongside veterinary practices, we also operate pet crematoria, laboratories, a distribution centre, an online business and buying groups.


An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a Biological Safety Officer to join the Health & Safety team at CVS Group. You will be working alongside the CVS Health and Safety team to support to the veterinary diagnostic laboratories and other divisions within the CVS Group with regard to Chemical and Biological Safety and to advise on regulatory requirements within the veterinary laboratory environment.


In this role, you will also be responsible for:

  • Creating suitable and sufficient risk assessments for veterinary laboratory environments and ensure these are in place.
  • Generate and ensure that the local rules for the safety of staff are drawn up and followed.
  • Produce training policy and training needs analysis for laboratory teams, ensure that appropriate training of staff is carried out, and ensure training records are kept.
  • Define individual laboratory H&S co-ordinator roles
  • Ensure that accidents/incidents/spillages/etc in the laboratory (or other containment facility) are appropriately investigated and followed up.
  • Advise on the safe storage, transport and disposal of infectious materials, harmful or potentially harmful material and ensure that records kept are current and accurate.
  • Organise and conduct inspections and audits of laboratories and lab areas.
  • Advise on appropriate methods for testing for the presence of biological agents outside the primary containment, if deemed necessary.
  • Inform employers of any changes to the relevant regulations.
  • Devise and maintain COSHH risk assessments and provide support on COSHH compliance across the Group.
  • Support veterinary laboratory related Health and Safety projects as directed


The ideal candidate will have:

  • A relevant Science degree with relevant Health and Safety experience
  • Alternatively, a level 6 qualification within Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Experience within a scientific work environment.
  • The ability to work autonomously and provide support to the Head of Health and Safety in managing Chemical and Biological Safety and advising on regulatory requirements within the diagnostic/medical laboratory environment.
  • Have demonstrable experience working within a multi-disciplined organization.
  • Be a solution-focused practitioner with a passion about influencing positive safety culture with workable and functional safety procedures.
  • Additional Laboratory related Health and Safety qualifications would be highly desirable, such as Radiation Protection Supervisor, Biosafety Practitioner or COSHH.

This is a home based role with travel across the South of the UK.
